Dear NBA Parents.
Several months ago, NBA Board President, Steve Nygreen, called together a group of NBA parents to discuss the need for and possibility of an “in house” tutor program. The meeting was quite a success with a number of ideas generated and questions answered. Since that time, NBA has launched a pilot tutor program whereby NBA provides tutors to families we serve. Tutors complete a rigorous training program, including both coursework and competency based supervised session work before working one-on-one with NBA students. New Training Coordinator, Caron Cosser, has worked diligently to create a comprehensive and meaningful on-going supervision for NBA Tutors as well. In late June 2009, NBA’s first three tutors began their training, and an additional three tutors have since started. Our current tutors come from a variety of backgrounds, from those previously in training to become speech language pathologists, to special education teachers, to individuals with training in completely different fields who want to make a change to their careers and a difference in the lives of others. Tutors are part time employees of NBA and typically see children two times per week in their homes for two hour sessions in addition to attending monthly team meetings and clinic meetings as necessary or requested.
NBA felt very strongly that we needed to provide this service to families in order to lessen the burden of high tutor turnover rate, quite varied training and supervision expectations, and the ever increasing costs of independently contracted home tutors. As employees, NBA Tutors carry liability insurance and adhere to our standards for professional conduct. Tutor time is billed as part of a child’s monthly services and NBA submits any insurance claim forms for tutor time as appropriate.
We welcome any feedback you may have about your current NBA tutor should you have one, including your thoughts abut the training process. In addition, if you are interested in more information about hiring a NBA tutors(s) for your child’s team, please contact your Program Manager.
